League Finals Info & Schedule

Our athletes did a terrific job at the league finals.  We have a large number of them qualifying for the finals.  The finals will start at 3:00 pm with the field events and at 4;00 with the running events.  The bus will leave at 1:30.

The league finals meet will be very exciting to watch.  There will be many great individual performances and a terrific team races between WHS and CDM in the boys' varsity (pedicted score has the teams less than 5 points apart) and between WHS and Irvine in the girls' varsity (predicted score is very close here also).

Results from Tuesday prelims can be found on http://www.dyestatcal.com/ or the Northwood H. S. web page.

Warrior Track & Field teams notch up FIVE (5) more victories VS Irvine H. S.:

The boys' varsity, the girls' varsity, the boys JV and the girls' JV teams locked up the dual meet championships with victories over Irvine H. S.  The boys varsity score was 87 -39; the girls varsity score was 73 - 54; the JV boys was 75-52, the JV girls was 101-26 and the frosh/soph boys was 69-58.

These results bring the season record to be 34-1 for the season and 24 - 1 for the league.

The overall league titles are determined by the combination results between the dual meets and the league finals finish.  Therefore, our team need to also win the league finals meet (next Friday) to be the league champions.  If one of our teams finishes second in the league finals, then our team will share the league championship with the team that wins the league finals.

League prelim on Tuesday.  The meet starts at 1:30 for field events and at 2:00 for running events.  The meet will take place at Irvine Stadium.

The buses will leave at 12:00 on Tuesday and at 2:00 on Friday.

Practices on Saturday.  Check with your event coach for details.

Track & Field News (12- 25-2012)

REVIEW:  It was a lot of fun to finally have a meet at Woodbridge and show off our team and talents (first time in 2 years).  There were a lot of people watching our team dominate.  We enjoyed much success at this past week’s competitions: League opening meet against Beckman and the Azusa Pacific Distance Meet of Champions.    In the league opener against Beckman, all five teams came away with victories:  VB:  98-29, VG 112-14, JV B 103-23, F/S 94-29 and JV G 120-7.  At the Azusa Pacific Distance Meet of Champions all six of our athletes registered PRs for their careers and they all earned meet medals.  Individual athlete results (for the season) can be accessed from:  http://www.gvarvas.com/ under the Track & Field page.  To view photos and videos of our meets, use these links:
http://www.facebook.com/find-friends/browser/?ref=ler#!/pages/Woodbridge-High-School-Cross-Country/170525689683198  also on the track and field photos link.  This is the main photos link for all the track team meets.

In the Beckman meet, our athletes performed well.  The boys’ varsity athletes place first in 13 of the 15 events.  Scott Patton (100, 200), Patrick Ingram (SP, DISC), Jeffrey Azuogu (LJ, TJ) and Austin Rouk (400, 300 IH) were double winners while TJ Rogerson (HJ), Dragan Simic (1600), Brandon Ferguson (3200) and Jared Klopfer (800) placed first in their respective events.  Our JV boys and the frosh/soph boys also enjoyed

The girl’s varsity athletes placed first in all 15 events.  Double winners included Hannah Heising (100 HH and 300 LH), Madeline Franklin (SP, DISC), Maia Craver  (200, 400) andMadeline Bradford  (HJ, 800).  Other first place finishers were Coco Evans(3200), Brina Jablonski (LJ), Natalie Woodings (TJ), Molly Babcock (1600) and Kelly Hwang (100).  The JV girls dominated every single event as the scores indicate.

At the Azusa pacific Distance Met of Champions, our athletes enjoyed much success against some of the best distance athletes in the State.  Dragan Simic broke the school record for the 1600 (4:12.06) and the mile (4:13.68) in the same race.  Brandon Ferguson also broke the school record in the 1600 (4:14.81) and the mile (4:16.41) but….  Jackson Marshall broke the school record in the F/S 3200 (9:42.16).  Career bests were registered by Molly Babcock (4:54.20 in the 1600 and 4:55.96 in the full mile), Madeline Bradford in the 800 (2:20.21) and Jared Klopfer in the 800 (2::00.97).  To view

It seemed that everyone had a good time at the meet (as it should be).  It is very important to our coaches that our athletes enjoy the meets.  By enjoying the successes, fun and competitions at these meets, our athletes should be more motivated to work harder during the week in order to continue the fun.  Easy meets (as this one was) sometimes give a team a false-sense of security and can lead to big disappointments in crucial meets down the line.  Our goal at our practices is to improve each day and to keep in mind who the real competition for the league championships and post season championships.  CDM and Irvine high schools will be very formidable opponents for both the boys’ and the girls’ titles.  Those meets are coming up.  In reality, the marks we achieved vs Beckman, will not hold up against these teams.  If we liked the success we enjoyed against Beckman, then we need to continue improving (as we have thus far this season) and working hard in our practices.  Make no mistake though, defeating any team (weak or strong) is always much more fun than losing; even if the loss comes against a very strong team.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:   Nadia Sine (she took a nasty fall in the 100 HH but came back without hesitation to compete the rest of the meet including the 300 LH) and Gabe Warner (excellent all around work and relay leg) for the sprint and hurdle events.  Jackson Marshall (new school record in the F/S 3200) and Coco Evans (strong 1600 and 3200 vs Beckman) for the distance events.  TJ Rogerson (first varsity victory with a 5’ 10” HJ) and Natalie Woodings (solid jumping in both the LJ and the TJ not only in this meet but for the entire season)

WEEKLY SCHEDULE/ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. University High School League Dual Meet # 2:  (WHS to Culver and left to Campus and left)
a.       The buses will leave at .  All athletes in good standing will be excused from 5th period.

b.       This is a very important meet for us in many ways.  University has talented athletes in the boys’ and girls’ distance events as well as in the jumping and girls’ 400 events.  We have enjoyed some very intense competition with Uni in the past in the past and in different Invitationals.  I expect them to be the toughest team we have faced thus far this year.  Competing on their track and in front of their school mates and parents should prove to be a big motivation for us to remain undefeated in league competition.  Each of our varsity athletes would have to rise to the occasion and perform at their highest level.

c.       Hurdle Crews for the 100 hurdles and the 300 will be the same as for the Beckman meet.

d.      Block Crews will not be needed this week as Uni is going to be in charge of them.

Warrior Track & Field Smoke Signals (3-12—12)

Review:  We enjoyed a most exciting, enjoyable and successful meets this past week.  On Thursday, we outscored Laguna Hills H. S. in all five divisions contested.  The boys varsity won by the score of 64-63 (the victory was sealed with a 1,2,3 finish in the 3200 and the victory in the 4x4 relay), while the girls varsity won 101 – 26;  JV girls won 79 – 57, the F/S boys won 72-64 and the JV boys won 60-42.  On Saturday (at the Irvine Invitational) we registered many impressive performances and  picked up some nice hardware (including a 3rd place finish for the girls’ varsity in the 30+ team field).

I thought the setting for both meets could not have been better.  The weather was very good for both meets  for the majority of the time the competition was amongst the best we will see all year, the enthusiasm was high (especially at the dual meet) and all of the athletes competed with heart and determination.  Our team demonstrated great support and enthusiasm for each other and our performances were impressive.

We enjoyed improvement in many of our events (jumps, relays, hurdles, sprints) and we keep adding some new talented athletes each week.  High school sports and especially H.S. track cannot get much better than this.  I hope all of you will have some special memories from this week besides the medals that were won.  The will to do your best for the team was obvious.  It is will such as this that helps young teams progress quickly to the top level of their sport.  Let’s keep this attitude and go-get-them attitude in all of our season.  You made us proud!

Among the high lights from the Invitational:  Molly Babcock’s victory in the 1600 (4:54.80 and the # 72 best time ever in CIF), Jeffrey Azoughu’s 41’4” in the Triple Jump,  Jackson Marshall’s (9:50.8 and 4:35.6) and Jake Suiste’s (4:43.8 & 10:04.6) PR in the distance races, frosh Scott Patton’s sub 12  and 24.4 sprints (against the wind) in the 100 & 200, Gabe Warner’s (another frosh) over 19’ LJ,  Brina Jablonski’s 60.2 (also 16’1” in the LJ) and Austin rouk’s 51.26 in the 400s, Jared Klopfers, 1st place finish and a new PR in the 800, Madie Franklin’s (29’6”, 87”8”) and Morgan Johnson’s (33’7”) throws (both earned medals for heir efforts, Patrick Ingram regaining his pop in the throws (41’1”, 139’6”),  Dragan Simmic (4:18.8) and Brandon Ferguson (4:19.8 & a Pr 9:24.1)) were the only athletes to break 4:20 from the same school and Hannah, Heising’s sub 16 and sub 49 hurdling,

Athletes of the meetMaddie Franklin for her throws (she is getting closer and closer to the 30-90 double) and Nick Sine in the TJ (just barely below the impressive 40’ level)are the field athletes of the week;  Brina Jablonski and Michael Scarlett (both excellent 400s and relay legs for the team) are the sprint/hurdle athletes of the meet; Jared Klopfer (first place finish in the 800 with a PR) and Alyssa Cerminara-Gutcher (nice PR 1600 of 5:24.5) were the distance athletes

  1. We have uniforms for those of you that have the older version.  Please take you old uniforms to the equipment room and exchange for the newer ones.

Have a great week of preparation for our meet and our league opener at University H. S. next week
