Track & Field News (12- 25-2012)

REVIEW:  It was a lot of fun to finally have a meet at Woodbridge and show off our team and talents (first time in 2 years).  There were a lot of people watching our team dominate.  We enjoyed much success at this past week’s competitions: League opening meet against Beckman and the Azusa Pacific Distance Meet of Champions.    In the league opener against Beckman, all five teams came away with victories:  VB:  98-29, VG 112-14, JV B 103-23, F/S 94-29 and JV G 120-7.  At the Azusa Pacific Distance Meet of Champions all six of our athletes registered PRs for their careers and they all earned meet medals.  Individual athlete results (for the season) can be accessed from:  http://www.gvarvas.com/ under the Track & Field page.  To view photos and videos of our meets, use these links:

In the Beckman meet, our athletes performed well.  The boys’ varsity athletes place first in 13 of the 15 events.  Scott Patton (100, 200), Patrick Ingram (SP, DISC), Jeffrey Azuogu (LJ, TJ) and Austin Rouk (400, 300 IH) were double winners while TJ Rogerson (HJ), Dragan Simic (1600), Brandon Ferguson (3200) and Jared Klopfer (800) placed first in their respective events.  Our JV boys and the frosh/soph boys also enjoyed

The girl’s varsity athletes placed first in all 15 events.  Double winners included Hannah Heising (100 HH and 300 LH), Madeline Franklin (SP, DISC), Maia Craver  (200, 400) andMadeline Bradford  (HJ, 800).  Other first place finishers were Coco Evans(3200), Brina Jablonski (LJ), Natalie Woodings (TJ), Molly Babcock (1600) and Kelly Hwang (100).  The JV girls dominated every single event as the scores indicate.

At the Azusa pacific Distance Met of Champions, our athletes enjoyed much success against some of the best distance athletes in the State.  Dragan Simic broke the school record for the 1600 (4:12.06) and the mile (4:13.68) in the same race.  Brandon Ferguson also broke the school record in the 1600 (4:14.81) and the mile (4:16.41) but….  Jackson Marshall broke the school record in the F/S 3200 (9:42.16).  Career bests were registered by Molly Babcock (4:54.20 in the 1600 and 4:55.96 in the full mile), Madeline Bradford in the 800 (2:20.21) and Jared Klopfer in the 800 (2::00.97).  To view

It seemed that everyone had a good time at the meet (as it should be).  It is very important to our coaches that our athletes enjoy the meets.  By enjoying the successes, fun and competitions at these meets, our athletes should be more motivated to work harder during the week in order to continue the fun.  Easy meets (as this one was) sometimes give a team a false-sense of security and can lead to big disappointments in crucial meets down the line.  Our goal at our practices is to improve each day and to keep in mind who the real competition for the league championships and post season championships.  CDM and Irvine high schools will be very formidable opponents for both the boys’ and the girls’ titles.  Those meets are coming up.  In reality, the marks we achieved vs Beckman, will not hold up against these teams.  If we liked the success we enjoyed against Beckman, then we need to continue improving (as we have thus far this season) and working hard in our practices.  Make no mistake though, defeating any team (weak or strong) is always much more fun than losing; even if the loss comes against a very strong team.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:   Nadia Sine (she took a nasty fall in the 100 HH but came back without hesitation to compete the rest of the meet including the 300 LH) and Gabe Warner (excellent all around work and relay leg) for the sprint and hurdle events.  Jackson Marshall (new school record in the F/S 3200) and Coco Evans (strong 1600 and 3200 vs Beckman) for the distance events.  TJ Rogerson (first varsity victory with a 5’ 10” HJ) and Natalie Woodings (solid jumping in both the LJ and the TJ not only in this meet but for the entire season)
