Warrior Track & Field teams notch up FIVE (5) more victories VS Irvine H. S.: 

The boys' varsity, the girls' varsity, the boys JV and the girls' JV teams locked up the dual meet championships with victories over Irvine H. S.  The boys varsity score was 87 -39; the girls varsity score was 73 - 54; the JV boys was 75-52, the JV girls was 101-26 and the frosh/soph boys was 69-58.

These results bring the season record to be 34-1 for the season and 24 - 1 for the league.

The overall league titles are determined by the combination results between the dual meets and the league finals finish.  Therefore, our team need to also win the league finals meet (next Friday) to be the league champions.  If one of our teams finishes second in the league finals, then our team will share the league championship with the team that wins the league finals.

League prelim on Tuesday.  The meet starts at 1:30 for field events and at 2:00 for running events.  The meet will take place at Irvine Stadium.

The buses will leave at 12:00 on Tuesday and at 2:00 on Friday.

Track & Field News (04-02-2012)

REVIEW:  It was another excellent week for the Warrior track & field teams as they competed against University H. S. (League Dual Meet) and at the Trabuco Hills Invitational.  All five teams remained undefeated in league competition as they outscored the cross-town rival Trojans by the following scores:  Varsity Boys:  93 – 34; Varsity girls:  80 – 47; F/S Boys106 -21; JV Boys:  92 – 35; JV Girls;  130-24.   The    Individual athlete results (for the season) will be posted on   http://www.gvarvas.com/ under the Track & Field page soon.  Pics from these meets are posted on:  http://www.facebook.com/find-friends/browser/?ref=ler#!/pages/Woodbridge-High-School-Cross-Country/170525689683198 

In the University Meet:  Dragan Simic (1600, 800), Jeffrey Azuogu (LJ, TJ), Maia Craver (100, 200), Molly Babcock (1600, 3200) and Hannah Heising (100HH, 300 LH) registered double victories.  Madeline Bradfor (800), Morgan Johnson (SP), Austin Rouk (400), Scott Patton (200),  Brando Ferguson (3200), Ryan Waterson (Dis) and TJ Rogerson (HJ) earned first place finishes in their events.  Our JV boys and girls and the frosh/soph boys dominated their events as well.

At the Trabuco Hills Invitational (one of the largest track & field invitational in So Calif), our athletes registered many PRs and competed well against some of the top athletes in CIF.  It is very impressive how our athletes bring out their best efforts in these pressure and competitive meets.  Here are some of our top performances:
Patrick Ingram (155’ season best in the Disc), Morgan Johnson (99’10” PR in Disc  and 33’7” PR in the shot), Maia Craver (25.74 PR in the 200 and first place, 1:00.43 Pr in the 400 and 58.9 anchor leg in the F/S girls school record 4x400 relay),  Girls F/S 4 x 400 (Car Vu – 62.5, Kyle Oefelein – 59.9, Hannah Heising - 61.9, Maia Craver – 58.9) relay team sets new school record, Hannah Heising (16.89 and 46.77 PR to win the 300 LH), Gabe Warner (PR 200 -23.43 and PR 400 -52.93), Scott Patton (PR 200 – 23.67 and Pr AFT 100 – 11.51), Maddie Franklin earned 4th place in Disc (89’ 04”) and shot put (30’08”), Jeffrey Azaogu (20’8” PR in LJ, and 41’6” TJ), Hannah O’Connor (5’2” ties PR and 5:24.82 1600 Pr), Kyle Oefelein season best in the 800 (2:22.85 and sub 60 in the 4x400 relay), Josh Thatcher (4:48.66 Pr in the 1600), Alexis Abad (5:29.58 Pr in the 1600), Anish Reddy sub 5:00 (4:59.28) 1600, and many other Prs in the 800 and 1600.

WEEKLY SCHEDULE/ANNOUNCEMENTS

I.                   Corona Del Mar High School League Dual Meet # 3 at WHS: 

a.        This will be the most important dual meet of the season thus far.  CDM boys’ team is the only other undefeated boys team in the league.  This meet will basically decide the dual meet championship for the season.  The CDM girls have one defeat (against Irvine) and will be very hungry to get back in the hunt for the league title.  They have a very strong team.  

b.      Woodbridge will officiate all 5 of the field events as well as the finishes in the running event.  We will need all the parent volunteers we can possibly round up for this meet.  The races will be very close and it will help to have back ups.  Please help us out by letting Kelly Babcock which event you can help with.

c.       Non-scoring 100s at .  Non-scoring 200s during the 3200. 

d.      Hurdle crews will be set up by Coach Craver and block crews will be set up by Coach K. and meet scoring crews will be set up by Coach V.

e.       Entries will be posted on Wednesday on the shed


II.  Arcadia Invitational on Friday & Saturday (WHS è Culver è

Track & Field News (12- 25-2012)

REVIEW:  It was a lot of fun to finally have a meet at Woodbridge and show off our team and talents (first time in 2 years).  There were a lot of people watching our team dominate.  We enjoyed much success at this past week’s competitions: League opening meet against Beckman and the Azusa Pacific Distance Meet of Champions.    In the league opener against Beckman, all five teams came away with victories:  VB:  98-29, VG 112-14, JV B 103-23, F/S 94-29 and JV G 120-7.  At the Azusa Pacific Distance Meet of Champions all six of our athletes registered PRs for their careers and they all earned meet medals.  Individual athlete results (for the season) can be accessed from:  http://www.gvarvas.com/ under the Track & Field page.  To view photos and videos of our meets, use these links:

In the Beckman meet, our athletes performed well.  The boys’ varsity athletes place first in 13 of the 15 events.  Scott Patton (100, 200), Patrick Ingram (SP, DISC), Jeffrey Azuogu (LJ, TJ) and Austin Rouk (400, 300 IH) were double winners while TJ Rogerson (HJ), Dragan Simic (1600), Brandon Ferguson (3200) and Jared Klopfer (800) placed first in their respective events.  Our JV boys and the frosh/soph boys also enjoyed

The girl’s varsity athletes placed first in all 15 events.  Double winners included Hannah Heising (100 HH and 300 LH), Madeline Franklin (SP, DISC), Maia Craver  (200, 400) andMadeline Bradford  (HJ, 800).  Other first place finishers were Coco Evans(3200), Brina Jablonski (LJ), Natalie Woodings (TJ), Molly Babcock (1600) and Kelly Hwang (100).  The JV girls dominated every single event as the scores indicate.

At the Azusa pacific Distance Met of Champions, our athletes enjoyed much success against some of the best distance athletes in the State.  Dragan Simic broke the school record for the 1600 (4:12.06) and the mile (4:13.68) in the same race.  Brandon Ferguson also broke the school record in the 1600 (4:14.81) and the mile (4:16.41) but….  Jackson Marshall broke the school record in the F/S 3200 (9:42.16).  Career bests were registered by Molly Babcock (4:54.20 in the 1600 and 4:55.96 in the full mile), Madeline Bradford in the 800 (2:20.21) and Jared Klopfer in the 800 (2::00.97).  To view

It seemed that everyone had a good time at the meet (as it should be).  It is very important to our coaches that our athletes enjoy the meets.  By enjoying the successes, fun and competitions at these meets, our athletes should be more motivated to work harder during the week in order to continue the fun.  Easy meets (as this one was) sometimes give a team a false-sense of security and can lead to big disappointments in crucial meets down the line.  Our goal at our practices is to improve each day and to keep in mind who the real competition for the league championships and post season championships.  CDM and Irvine high schools will be very formidable opponents for both the boys’ and the girls’ titles.  Those meets are coming up.  In reality, the marks we achieved vs Beckman, will not hold up against these teams.  If we liked the success we enjoyed against Beckman, then we need to continue improving (as we have thus far this season) and working hard in our practices.  Make no mistake though, defeating any team (weak or strong) is always much more fun than losing; even if the loss comes against a very strong team.


ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:   Nadia Sine (she took a nasty fall in the 100 HH but came back without hesitation to compete the rest of the meet including the 300 LH) and Gabe Warner (excellent all around work and relay leg) for the sprint and hurdle events.  Jackson Marshall (new school record in the F/S 3200) and Coco Evans (strong 1600 and 3200 vs Beckman) for the distance events.  TJ Rogerson (first varsity victory with a 5’ 10” HJ) and Natalie Woodings (solid jumping in both the LJ and the TJ not only in this meet but for the entire season)


WEEKLY SCHEDULE/ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. University High School League Dual Meet # 2:  (WHS to Culver and left to Campus and left)
a.       The buses will leave at .  All athletes in good standing will be excused from 5th period.

b.       This is a very important meet for us in many ways.  University has talented athletes in the boys’ and girls’ distance events as well as in the jumping and girls’ 400 events.  We have enjoyed some very intense competition with Uni in the past in the past and in different Invitationals.  I expect them to be the toughest team we have faced thus far this year.  Competing on their track and in front of their school mates and parents should prove to be a big motivation for us to remain undefeated in league competition.  Each of our varsity athletes would have to rise to the occasion and perform at their highest level.

c.       Hurdle Crews for the 100 hurdles and the 300 will be the same as for the Beckman meet. 

d.      Block Crews will not be needed this week as Uni is going to be in charge of them.

e.       Score books will be taken care by Reddy, Dean, Swanson, Opre and Ledina

f.        Woodbridge will officiate the LJ, SP and HJ events.  We will also need 3 timers for the finish line

  1. Great opportunity for some high-level competition in this meet.  I expect that our top-level athletes will hit some impressive marks.

Warrior Track & Field Smoke Signals (3-12—12)

Review:  We enjoyed a most exciting, enjoyable and successful meets this past week.  On Thursday, we outscored Laguna Hills H. S. in all five divisions contested.  The boys varsity won by the score of 64-63 (the victory was sealed with a 1,2,3 finish in the 3200 and the victory in the 4x4 relay), while the girls varsity won 101 – 26;  JV girls won 79 – 57, the F/S boys won 72-64 and the JV boys won 60-42.  On Saturday (at the Irvine Invitational) we registered many impressive performances and  picked up some nice hardware (including a 3rd place finish for the girls’ varsity in the 30+ team field).

I thought the setting for both meets could not have been better.  The weather was very good for both meets  for the majority of the time the competition was amongst the best we will see all year, the enthusiasm was high (especially at the dual meet) and all of the athletes competed with heart and determination.  Our team demonstrated great support and enthusiasm for each other and our performances were impressive. 

We enjoyed improvement in many of our events (jumps, relays, hurdles, sprints) and we keep adding some new talented athletes each week.  High school sports and especially H.S. track cannot get much better than this.  I hope all of you will have some special memories from this week besides the medals that were won.  The will to do your best for the team was obvious.  It is will such as this that helps young teams progress quickly to the top level of their sport.  Let’s keep this attitude and go-get-them attitude in all of our season.  You made us proud!

Among the high lights from the Invitational:  Molly Babcock’s victory in the 1600 (4:54.80 and the # 72 best time ever in CIF), Jeffrey Azoughu’s 41’4” in the Triple Jump,  Jackson Marshall’s (9:50.8 and 4:35.6) and Jake Suiste’s (4:43.8 & 10:04.6) PR in the distance races, frosh Scott Patton’s sub 12  and 24.4 sprints (against the wind) in the 100 & 200, Gabe Warner’s (another frosh) over 19’ LJ,  Brina Jablonski’s 60.2 (also 16’1” in the LJ) and Austin rouk’s 51.26 in the 400s, Jared Klopfers, 1st place finish and a new PR in the 800, Madie Franklin’s (29’6”, 87”8”) and Morgan Johnson’s (33’7”) throws (both earned medals for heir efforts, Patrick Ingram regaining his pop in the throws (41’1”, 139’6”),  Dragan Simmic (4:18.8) and Brandon Ferguson (4:19.8 & a Pr 9:24.1)) were the only athletes to break 4:20 from the same school and Hannah, Heising’s sub 16 and sub 49 hurdling,

Track & Field Newsletter (3-05-2012)

REVIEW:  We enjoyed a most wonderful, and in some cases, spectacular start to the 2012 season.  Our athletes enjoyed themselves and they competed with enthusiasm, determination and tenacity.  Our results were impressive!   Varsity Boys:  WHS 69 – Tesoro 66; Varsity Girls:  WHS 89 Tesoro 47 (WHS placed 1st in 12 of the 15 events); Frosh/Soph Girls:  WHS 78 Tesoro 58; Frosh soph boys:  WHS 48  Tesoro 88.

The weather was excellent, the facilities were real good and the follow through by our athletes made this meet a most fun meet. We enjoyed very nice performances from our veteran athletes and many of our first-time tricksters.  Some of the top performances by our boys were:  Very impressive double victories by Brandon Ferguson in the 1600 & 3200;  first ever varsity victories by Jared Klopfer  in the 800, Scott Patton in the long jump, Shayaan Naik in the triple jump; sweep of the 800, discus and long jump; an outstanding anchor leg in the 4x400 (to seal the victory for the boys) by Austin Rouk and a double frosh/soph victory by Jake Suiste in the 1600 and 3200.

For the girls:  Double victories by Hannah Heising in the 100 HH and 300LH, Molly Babcock in theh 1600 & 3200 and Brina Jabloski in the 100 and 200; event victories by Maia Craver in the 400, Erin Oefelein, Morgan Johnson in the shot put, Natalie Wooding sin the triple jump and Maddie Franklin in the discus; and souble victories by Lillian Hollar in the high jump and 400 for the frosh soph girls.

On Saturday, we competed in tough division II in the Earl Engman Relays and our athletes earned medals in practically race.  Woodbridge placed first in many of the events contested including the boys’ Distance Medley Relay that set a meet record.  Some of the other victories included the girls in the shuttle hurdle relay, the 4 x 800 relay for the boys and the girls, the girls’ high jump (all three of the girls jumped a PR 5’0” with Hannah O’Connor jumping a PR 5’2”), the girls’ shot put team, the girls long jump team, the boys and the girls’ 4 x 400 relay,

We hope that the enthusiasm of the team, the successes our athletes enjoyed and the efforts put forth will serve to motivate more of our athletes to want to contribute and be part of something special for this season.  We want to congratulate our athletes and challenge them to continue to work hard so that these successes would be repeated at even more competitive meets than the ones we had this past week.  Our future opponents and meets will offer stiffer opposition for us.  If we continue to work hard and get our new athletes in better racing form, the results will continue to turn out in our favor.  Let us not be satisfied being good.  Let us strive to become great!

  1.  Be sure that you are in school uniform in order to board the bus.  Stay in school uniform for the entire meet. 

  1. Laguna Hills could be as tough an opponent as Tesoro was.  They have strong hurdles and sprints and relays (from what we saw on Saturday).  Our overall balance and quality should help us reamin undefeated for the season though

b.      Each athlete needs to provide his/hers own transportation and to be at the meet at least one hour and thirty minutes before their event is scheduled to start.  The meet can run ahead of schedule and we do not want to miss the event nor not be properly warmed up for it.

c.       Entries will be posted on Wednesday.  There will be four divisions (varsity boys and girls and frosh/soph boys at this meet).

  1. Next week’s meet will be Edison High School (first time in our school history that we will be competing agaains the Charges).  It will be at Edison on Thursday. 

  1. No Saturday Invitational next week as the Laguna Hills Invitational was cancled and the coches decided not to attend another meet at this time.
